Ride the Wind

Ride the Wind-
By James Hunnicutt
Time after time
Now & then
See she come
To take my hand
Then just like the wind
Gone again
Heaven’s Hell
Salvation’s sin
Forever she goes
To ride the wind
Time after time
Dive right in
Fall & die
To ride the wind
How she bites
Through my skin so thin
Banshee cry
Hear her laugh
As she tears
Through my skin

Gently She Walks

Gently She Walks-
By James Hunnicutt
Gently she walks
Shining & free
Rustling the leaves
And grass beneath
'Cross all eternity
She comes back to me
Only in her light
Can my soul be free
Follow as she wanders
Forever more to dream
Through her endless journey
Was never meant for me
Oh, so gently she walks
Formless & free
Tending my grave
Carries all to be, for me
And somewhere inside
Not far behind
She holds all beauty
And all between
Scattered to the wind
Lies the long-lost essence
All that was & is
And may be of me

Legend of the Bell Witch

Legend of the Bell Witch-
By James Hunnicutt
To you who try to burn me
A hellish life for you to know
Your fears shall ascend me
Cast dark shadows upon your soul
Evermore grow weak & weary
Heavy be your mortal toiling toll
I am the native stone
Your failing mind must forever roll
Pulling hair & pin pricks
To numb your ever slaving mouth
Damn your kin & little Betsy
Make them flail, suffer & toss about
I am the dead black dog
Green & swaying wildly from the trees
Roaming from house to home
To speak the illest truths of thee
So you run
Run
Pace you through the hills
Down the river, to the caves
Your sleepless nights avenge me
Forever far beyond the grave
Long past Adams County
And the rolling hills of Tennessee
Wher'er you dare to go
Know that I'll forever walk with thee
Far beyond the grave

Feathers in the Mist

Feathers in the Mist-
By James Hunnicutt
Scattered to the Four Directions
To walk the Spirit Road
Forever black
Feathers in the mist
Lighter than the air
So densely thick
Someday all will know the depths
Of this offense
A-Ho
Sweet Grandmothers
Grandfathers show you
The bloodied hands in all that you still do
Feathers in the mist
Float upon the air
Everywhere
And nowhere at all
-When the darkened streets
Of your cities appear deserted
They will throng with our ancestors
Who once filled & still love this beautiful land
No generation shall be alone
So be just & deal kindly with all beings
For the dead are not all together powerless
In truth, there is no death
Only a change of worlds-
Not just the fallen warriors
All the children, too
Taken far beyond blue
None shall pass
Through this space
In innocence
Try though you may
They lay in wait
For you

Raindrops Through the Eye-
By James Hunnicutt
Gently claim the sleep
Such bitter tears to weep
Scattered far & wide
Who'd ever know
Anticipated the surprise
As raindrops fade
Can't close my eyes
All within swells
All without subsides
Guess it never really mattered
Time to move to barren skies
Each hesitation
Every truth & all its lies
Fading like raindrops
Poured through the eyes
Still, I don't see the light
Dare not speak of the light
Why did they speak of the light
How could they speak such lies
My love said I had it comin'

Looking Up the Stairs

Looking Up the Stairs-
By James Hunnicutt
How could you do this to me
Must you forever punish me
Was it truly the foulest of deeds
To place another's heart so recklessly brief
Before thee
By words unspoken
You offer no reprieve
Clearly, it means that much to you
To forever shun & remind me
It's all you've left behind for me
When I look up the stairs
Forsaken to be
Forever to see
Sweet, cursed memories of thee

No More Aces

No More Aces-
By James Hunnicutt
She wouldn't hear them lies no more
Burst through them swinging doors
Too big a fool to implore
And so, I took all her bullets
Then proudly hit the floor
No more aces
Her face is wild
I rode the stakes too high
For her to pardon this trial
So, I beg of you bartender
Won't you hurry out my one last round?
Pour it through the holes in my chest, into my blood
Before it drowns, take me down
No more aces
Swore to be a night to remember
Said she'd do the world a favor
For any lyin', cheatin', rollin' rambler
A smoke-filled tomb, a broken floor
Covered in crimson amber
Looks like a I've hit the floor again
But I won't be getting up this time my friend
Not this time my friend
I guess all good things must come to an end
No more aces
I done drove her wild
I rode the stakes too high
For her to ever live it down

Waiting For Number 7

Waiting For Number 7
By James Hunnicutt
I’m waiting for Number 7
She’s 10 long years past due
Slowly she pulls to the station
Though she never seems to make it through
My lot in life but to be a porter
Shoveling lungs full of fire & coal
Forever I wait for her long arrival
'Cuz her haul, it carries my soul
She whistles & whines
Laughs & she cries
Planting her seeds in my mind
No matter how hard I toil
She pulls off to leave me behind
Waitin’ on old Number 7
She’s 20 long years past due
Like a ghost she floats to the station
A flash & she pulls right through…
Have you no room for your lowly porter?
Lungs full of fiery tears & coal
Forever awaiting your arrival
For your haul, carries my soul

Driving Midnight Nails

Driving Midnight Nails-
By James Hunnicutt
Well, I guess it ain’t so bad now
The ways things are as such
She’s a long road to hoe
Still, I’ve delt with twice as much
No need to save them pennies
To patch this old sod roof
Though yesterday was ugly
Today I live my truth
Each night I let it go
When I help the night winds wail
Here to make yer skin crawl
Gonna drive them midnight nails
We get what we deserve
So that don’t confront me
If we live a life of truth
Then the truth will set us free
Ya held those pretty pennies
Above a life or two
But you can’t hide yer soul behind
The steeple on that roof
Whoa to thee, as darkness
Takes yer last heirloom
Ya can hide within them shadows
But your fires comin’ soon
Each night I let ya know
When I make the night winds wail
Love to make yer skin crawl
When I drive them midnight nails
Ya’ get what you deserve
So that don't confront me
You lived a lie for truth
So, Hell will set you free
Gonna watch ya dance for me
Shake & quake for me
I'm here to let ya know
When I make the night winds wail
Love to make yer skin crawl
Gonna drive them midnight nails
Ya’ get what you deserve
So that don't confront me
You lived a lie for truth
So, Hell will set you free
Good luck with that...
